Sowing the seeds for the community

Malting Process

The building is the last remaining old maltings in Bury St Edmunds and is of great historical significance to this important brewing town.

In the 17th century the original barn on site was converted into a maltings. The malthouse produced and supplied vast quantities of malt to local brewers.

Some of the malthouse occupants were listed by R. Paine, a surveyor, who recorded all occupants and owners in Bury St Edmunds in 1833. Recorded in the directories of 1844 onwards the malthouse had become part of the Clarke Brothers brewing business. The Clarke Brewery, known as Clarke Bros. after 1896, was held in high regard for the brew known as Invalid Stout.

The brothers were eventually brought out by Greene King in 1917 along with other smaller maltings and breweries in the area. Subsequently, the malthouse was knocked down and ceased to exist.

Many original maltings artefacts were discovered during the renovation work, which can be viewed here link to photo gallery and are on display in Heritage Centre at The Malthouse Project.
